A Journey Through Time
Our History
Church of the Nativity was established by Cardinal Lawrence Shehan in 1968 to serve the growing communities of Lutherville and Timonium in north Baltimore County. Under the leadership of its founding pastor, Monsignor Charles Meisel, it was envisioned to be a distinctly different kind of parish. Solidly built on the foundation of our Catholic Tradition and Eucharistic faith, it was to embody the new priorities and initiatives of the Second Vatican Council, which had just concluded, reengaging the modern world with the message of Jesus Christ.
Meeting initially at Ridgely Middle School, a large property was acquired on Ridgely Road in Timonium and construction on a contemporary style church building began in 1970. When completed two years later, the complex included a sanctuary with seating for 500, classrooms for religious education programs, and a small office suite. During this period the congregation grew rapidly and was widely viewed as most successful.
In more recent years, the next generation of parish leaders stepped forward, led by Father Michael White and his associate Tom Corcoran. Responding to new challenges facing churches everywhere, God placed a bold new vision on their hearts to reach unchurched Catholics in north Baltimore. This new initiative eventually led to robust growth and the construction of a new sanctuary building seating 1,500. Currently, the congregation is undertaking still another building project, significantly expanding space for kids and student programs.
Today, Nativity is a vibrant and dynamic community of Orthodox believers, deeply committed to living and sharing our Catholic faith.
